There is a great new article on eMarketer about the impact of fandom (and followingdom) on purchase behavior. A quick quote:
"More than one-half of Facebook fans said they are more likely to make a purchase for at least a few brands, and 67% of Twitter followers reported the same."
Meaning there are some hard numbers on the ROI impact of social media. What struck me was if there were notable differences in some of these results between local and national brands. Another quote:
"The top reason to friend a brand on Facebook was to receive discounts, followed by simply being a customer of the company and a desire to show others that they support the brand. On Twitter, discounts, up-to-the-minute information and exclusive content were the main draws; only 2% of respondents followed brands on Twitter to show their support."
This felt contrary to my behavior as I thought about local vs. national brands. Indeed, I will often Fan or Follow a local business JUST because it's local (in my town or community) and i want local businesses to succeed.
So the question is, does a local business that's getting the "atta boy" support from the community get the same impact on purchasing? My sense is YES, because ultimately my purchase behavior is consistent with the report (e.g. - I like deals and discounts) and the reason for initially becoming a fan (support) easily shifts to taking advantage of that good-natured gestured. Maybe altruism is dead.
