Verizon Serious about Wireless
If there was any question about the direction Verizon is taking, their decision to sell a significant chunk of their wireline business to Frontier certainly seems to clinch it. Verizon is a wireless company. They believe the future is in wireless communications - voice and data. And they believe they will be in a unique position to deliver the services both consumers and businesses want and need over those same wireless spectrums. Of course this comes at the same time Verizon continues to build out FIOS infrastructure in many high-density states, but it's not like the footprint - Arizona, California, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Washington, Wisconsin, and West Virginia - is to be laughed at.
I would expect to see a similar fixed line to wireless transition in Mexico soon, with Telmex (the incumbent wireline carrier, owned by Carlos Slim's Carso Group), being sold off such that Carlos can focus on his wireless business Telcel.
